With the gradual disappearance of the Gurukula method of teaching music and the introduction of music as a subject in schools and colleges, there was a great demand among students for printed text books. The pathfinder in respect of publishing such graded books was the late Prof.. P. Sambamoorthi who should be called the father of Indian musicology. His method was followed by several later Vidwans and musicologists and Vidwan A.S. Panchapakesa lyer, Principal of the Bharatiya Music College of Bombay, is a musician who has been rendering yeoman service in this direction. After teaching music in Madras for three decades, he is continuing his services to the art in Bombay.
Sri lyer comes from a musical family and is the brother of the late Sangita Kalanidhi Alattur Srinivasa lyer. He is not only a devoted teacher but also a musicologist who has published a large number of extremely useful books on Carnatic music. These include Ganamrita Varnal Malika, Kirtana Malika, Navagraha Ganamrutham and the Purandara Ganamrutham. He has also published books in English and Kannada.
The present book 'Karnataka Sangita Sastra' was originally written in Tamil and so great was lyer's enthusiasm that he wrote the entire book of 160 pages in his own handwriting and got it printed by the offset process.
